CHAK’s history dates back to the 1930s when it was established as a Hospitals’ Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). In 1946 it attained autonomous legal registration under the name of the Protestant Churches Medical Association (PCMA). Its mandate was limited to distribution of Government grants to Protestant Churches’ health facilities.

In 1982 the Association changed its name to Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK) and took on the broader mandate of facilitating the role of the Church in health care and the healing ministry.
