The commitment of the Kenya Government to support FBO level 2 health facilities (dispensaries) with essential drugs is now a reality. Distribution of the drugs to 620 FBO dispensaries throughout Kenya was started in April 2008 by the Ministry of Health through Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA).
Each dispensary kit contains 82 essential drugs and medical supplies required for services in level 2 facilities. The drug kits are being distributed to health facilities recommended by CHAK, KEC and SUPKEM Health secretariats and approved by MOH. This support comes in response to the sustainability crisis facing FBO health facilities in Kenya caused by increased cost of providing services and reduced external subsidies.
KEMSA is applying the push system of distribution alongside the routine quarterly drugs distribution to MOH health facilities. However, in provinces where the pull system has been introduced, the same system has been applied to FBO health facilities. Guidelines for the drugs' distribution, pricing and monitoring were developed jointly by FBOs and MOH through the MOH-FBHS-TWG. The guidelines allow a reduced user fees of Ksh50 for each patient treated. Click here to view guidelines for distribution of the drugs M&E reporting forms Drugs re-distribution authorisation forms
